Types of Hand Tools and Their Functions
Types of Hand Tools and Their Functions - Hand tools are work tools that use human power. Where in this case requires an active role from the user's hand to perform its function properly. There are many kinds of hand tools that are commonly used in the automotive field, where most of these hand tools are also used in our daily life, but maybe we don't know that these tools are included in the type of hand tools.

Various Hand Tools and Their Functions
Wrench
A wrench is a hand tool that serves to tighten and loosen bolts and nuts. In most workshop tools, these locks are made of chrome and vanadium alloy metal.
Here are some wrenchs that are commonly used in automotive repair shops and their functions:
1. Open End Wrench
Function: Assists in the work process of tightening or loosening nuts and bolts, especially in narrow areas.
The Open End Wrench is not suitable for loosening tight nuts/bolts because the minimal grip area on the wrench can make the bolts/nuts rub against each other and cause wear.
2. Box Wrench
Function: Assist in the work process of tightening or loosening nuts and bolts with a large enough tightening moment and can be used to work in limited spaces.
Box Wrench has a better grip area than Open End Wrench
3. Cobination Wrench
Function: Assist in the work process of tightening or loosening nuts or bolts, especially in places that are not reached by the socket wrench.
The tightening moment/torque of the combination wrench is quite small, but care must be taken in tightening the bolt with a small tightening moment specification, don't torque it too tight because it will cause the bolt to break.
4. Shock T Handle
Function: Tighten or loosen nuts / bolts in narrow areas and out of reach such as body bolts or bolts in the alternator area.
5. Spark Plug Wrench
Function: special for removing and installing spark plugs
Spark plug wrench is made with standard sizes following the existing spark plug sizes, namely 10 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm
6. Wheel Nuts and Bolts Wrench
Function: specially used for tightening and loosening wheel nuts.
Wheel nuts and bolt wrench sizes in general are 19 mm and 21 mm
7. Allen Wrench
Function: Tighten or loosen bolts with hexagonal or star-shaped holes on their heads.
Allen Wrench measures between 2 -22 mm and its cross section is hexagonal (hexagonal) and star-shaped (Allen Wrench star)
8. Adjustable Wrench
Function: used when there is no wrench that matches the size of the nut / bolt to be tightened / loosened
Adjustable Wrench is a wrench whose size can be changed according to the size of the nut/bolt to be tightened/loosened by turning the jaw adjuster.
Adjustable Wrench is not designed for heavy service work / jobs that require a lot of force to tighten / loosen nuts and bolts.
9. Flare Nut Wrench
Function: Tighten or loosen bolts on pipe joints such as injector lines and brake lines
Use The Flare Nut Wrench is only used to tighten/loosen the nipple bolts. The use of the Flare Nut Wrench must be used carefully and slowly because the nipple bolts are prone to fracture.
10. Socket Wrench
Function: Basically, socket wrench has the same function as box wrench, which is to loosen or unscrew nuts and bolts.
Pliers
Pliers are a type of hand tool that serves to hold the workpiece. Here are some types of pliers that are widely used in automotive repair shops
1. Combination Pliers
Function: used for holding flat and small cylindrical workpieces, cutting wires, winding wires and cutting thin metal
2. Snap-Ring Pliers (Cirlip Pliers)
Function: used specifically for removing and installing snap rings (circlips)
There are 2 snap ring models used, namely straight and bent snap rings. Based on their function, snap ring pliers are divided into inner snap ring pliers and outer snap ring pliers
2 types of snap ring pliers, namely internal circlip and external circlip
3. Long Nose Pliers
Function: clamping or bending wires or thin metal in narrow areas/areas. The sharp inner jaws of these Long Nose Pliers can be used to cut wires.
4. Side Cutting Pliers
Function: cutting wire and peeling and cutting wires with a certain diameter.
Standard cutting pliers used in automotive repair shops usually measure 17 cm
5. Slip Joint Pliers
Function: Slip Joint Pliers have a pin hole that can be shifted (pivot pin) so that this type of pliers can be used to grip components by sliding their jaws.
6. Interlocking Joint Pliers
Function: Grips round or bent objects firmly.
Basically the function of this type of hand tool is the same as Slip Joint Pliers, namely to grip objects but Interlocking Joint Pliers can grip the workpiece more firmly
7. Vice Grip
Function: used to hold components or workpieces to be welded, cut or drilled
Hammer
In the automotive world, a hammer is one of the most widely used hand tools and it is important that it is always ready to use in automotive workshops. But these hammers are not versatile, so various kinds of hammers with special characteristics are made suitable for the job. Some components have strong resistance but there are also components that are at risk of being damaged if hit.
1. Ball Pen Hammer
Function: used for hitting metal and chisels, rounding rivets and shaping metal
2. Brass Hammer
Function: used to hit the components with moderate force so as not to damage the components that are hit.
3. Rubber Hammer
Function: used for tire installation work
4. Plastic Hammer
Function: used to hit the components with a light force so as not to damage the components that are hit.
5. Leather Hammer
Function: used to hit the surface of very smooth workpieces or soft materials without causing damage.
Screwdriver
1. Ordinary Screwdriver (Screwdriver + and Screwdriver - )
Function: used to tighten or loosen screws according to size.
2. Offset Screwdriver
Function: used to tighten bolts with grooved heads or screws whose locations cannot be reached by ordinary screwdrivers.
3. Impact Screwdriver
Function: used to tighten or loosen grooved head bolts or screws with relatively higher tightening moments.
Vise
Function: used to hold / clamp objects firmly, for example used to clamp workpieces when the process of filing, chiseling or sawing.
Handsaw
Function: used to cut metal alloys / plates and steel that has a low carbon content.
Gasket Scraper
Function: used to remove gasket material attached to components before being reassembled
Pin Punch
Function: used to open or attach a pin.
Tap and Snei
Tap function: used to cut the thread to match the bolt partner and repair nuts with damaged threads.
Snei function: used to make a new thread on a piece of round iron or to repair a thread that has been damaged.
Wire Brush
Function: used to remove carbon, gasket marks and dirt or rust from metal surfaces
