Types of Electrical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions

Types of Electrical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions - Electrical measuring instruments are measuring instruments used to measure electrical quantities, including voltage, current, and resistance/resistance.

There are various kinds of electrical measuring instruments commonly used in automotive repair shops. But to perform its function properly, each of these measuring instruments has one thing in common, namely that electric measuring instruments require electrical power. Whether it's from an AC current source (alternating current) for example home electricity or a DC current source (direct current) from a battery.

So what is the difference between electricity and electronics?

So most of us are still confused about the difference between electricity and electronics. Electric is another term for electricity and electronics is a term for tools/objects that work based on electronic principles.

The following are various types of electrical measuring tools commonly used in automotive repair shops:

  • Ampere meter
  • ohm meter
  • Watt meter
  • voltmeter
  • Multimeter

Various kinds of electrical measuring instruments and their functions

1. Ampere meter

Ampere meter is a measuring instrument used to measure the magnitude of the electric current flowing in a circuit

On the ampere meter there is usually a scale for the ampere, milli ampere, and micro ampere.

Function: Measure the electric current in the circuit

2.Voltmeter

A volt meter is a tool used to measure the voltage/potential difference between two points

A volt meter is a galvano meter in series with a high resistance resistor.

There are 2 types of volt meters, analog and digital volt meters. For analog volt meters, there is usually a pointer (needle) as an indicator of the measurement value. As for the digital volt meter using an LCD.

The measuring capability of the volt meter is limited, depending on the maximum value indicated on the measuring instrument.

Function: Measuring voltage (potential difference)

3. Ohm meter

Ohm meter is a tool used to measure electrical resistance and determine the resistance value of an electronic load, and to test the continuity of circuits such as switches, fuses, etc., whether disconnected or open circuit.

Ohm meter uses a galvano meter to measure the amount of electric current that passes through an electrical resistance (resistance), then calibrated to Ohm units.

Function: Measuring electrical resistance

4. Watt meter

A watt meter is an instrument for measuring electrical power in watts

A watt meter is basically a combination of an ampere meter and a volt meter, which functions to directly measure the power used in an electrical circuit.

Function: Measuring electric power

5. Multimeter

It is a multifunctional electronic measuring instrument, where the multimeter can be used as an ampere meter, volt meter, and ohm meter.

This multimeter is an electrical measuring instrument that is most often used in the automotive world, especially for checking all electrical components. Multimeter is often called AVO meter or multitester.

There are two types of multimeters, namely analog multimeters and digital multimeters. The type of measurement and measurement value can be selected by rotating the selector, and the reading results will be displayed on the number scale on the display.

The following are measurements that are usually carried out in automotive repair shops using a multimeter:

  • Battery voltage measurement
  • Continuity
  • Fuse and electrical checks, sensors and actuators
  • measurement of resistance value of spark plug wires, high voltage wires
  • Various checks in the starting and charging system, etc.

Function: Measure current (AC and DC), measure voltage, and resistance (resistance)

So that's the discussion about the types of electrical measuring instruments and their functions. Now you know the answer if you have a question about what is an electric voltage meter? or measuring instrument electric current, or measuring instrument electrical resistance? In short, you can answer the AVO meter.
