Types of Mechanical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions

Types of Mechanical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions - Mechanical measuring instruments are measuring instruments used for mechanical measurements. What are the mechanical measurements that you already know? So when you are measuring the length, width, depth, diameter (inside diameter and outer diameter) of a workpiece, you are doing a mechanical measurement. Usually for measuring instruments related to measuring the dimensions of an object, there are 2 types of measurement scales, namely using the metric scale (mm) and the inch scale.

Relationship between Metric and Inches: 1 Inch equals 25.4 mm

The following are various types of mechanical measuring tools commonly used in automotive repair shops:

  • Steel Ruler
  • Measuring tape
  • Protractor
  • Outside Caliper
  • Inside Caliper
  • Vernier Caliper
  • Micrometer (Inside/Outside)
  • Depth Gauge
  • Valve Spring Tester
  • Feller Gauge
  • Telescopic Gauge
  • Dial Indicator
  • Cylinder Bore Gauge
  • Thread Gauge

What are the functions of the above mechanical measuring tools? Here's the explanation.

Types of Mechanical Measuring Instruments and Their Functions

1. Steel Ruler

Steel ruler is made of stainless steel, with varying lengths

Function: Measure length, width, height, depth

Scale: Inch, cm, mm

Level of Accuracy / Measurement Precision: 1mm

Size: 300mm/30cm, 500mm/50cm, 1000mm/100cm

The steel ruler is the simplest and most widely used mechanical measuring tool.

2. Measuring Tape

Function: Measure length, width, height, depth with a long enough distance

Scale: Metric and inches

Level of Accuracy/Measurement Precision: 1mm

Size: 2000 mm/2m, 5000 mm/5m, up to 30.000 mm/30 m

3. Protractor

A semicircular protractor with a long, straight piece of metal that can be moved on its axis to measure up to 180 degrees of rotation

Function: Measure the angles of an object and check the position of the hole

4. Outside Caliper

Outside caliper is a mechanical measuring instrument that has 2 feet as a gauge, a spring turning point and an adjusting screw

Function: Measure the outer diameter, measure the outer dimension and check the alignment of the outer surface of the workpiece.

5. Inside Caliper

The inside caliper has 2 legs as gauges, a spring turning point and an adjusting screw to hold the legs together so they don't move when taking measurements so that the results obtained are more accurate.

Function: Measure the inside diameter, measure the inside dimensions and check the alignment of the inner surface of the workpiece by comparing the size of the inside caliper jaw opening with an appropriate measuring scale.

6. Vernier Caliper

Vernier Caliper is a mechanical measuring tool where in use it is by shifting the measuring jaw until it touches the surface of the workpiece

Function: Measure the length, outside diameter, inside diameter and depth of an object.

Measurement Accuracy/Precision: 0.02 mm and 0.05 mm

Measuring Range: 0 - 150 mm, 0 - 200 mm, 0 - 300 mm

7. Outside Micrometer

Function: Measure the length, thickness and outer diameter of an object

Measurement Accuracy/Precision: 0.01 mm

Measuring Range: (0 -25, 25 - 50, 50 - 75, 75 - 100) mm

8. Inside Micrometer

Function: Measure the inner diameter of a workpiece and check whether the surface is parallel.

Measurement Accuracy/Precision: 0.01 mm

Measuring Range: (50 - 75, 75 - 100, 100 - 125, 125 - 150, 150 - 175, 175 - 200) mm

8. Depth Gauge

Depth Gauge consists of the main scale on the fixed part and the vernier scale on the sliding part

Function: Measuring the depth of a hole, in periodic maintenance can be used to check the height of the grooves from the tires to check tire wear.

9. Valve Spring Tester

Function: Test the spring elasticity level

10. Feeler Gauge

Function: Measure / check the gap between 2 surfaces.

To prevent rusting, the feller gauge must be lubricated with good quality oil

11. Telescopic Gauge

Function: Measure the inner diameter of a workpiece that has a small size.

12. Dial Indicator

Function: Measuring surface flatness, cylinder roundness, and workpiece ductility.

Measurement Accuracy/Precision: 0.01 mm

13. Cylinder Bore Gauge

Function: Measuring cylinder diameter with precision

Measurement Accuracy/Precision : 0.01 mm

14. Thread Gauge

Function: Measuring the thread pitch of nuts and bolts
