The Difference Between LED TV and OLED TV - LED TV and OLED TV are popular types of TV today because of various advantages such as lower power consumption, good picture quality, thin and light. But both have different technologies and also with different costs and lifetimes.
Technically, the most basic difference is that TVs with LED Technology do not have their own lighting but require a backlight to operate. This is very different from OLED technology which is self-illuminating so it does not require a backlight to start its operation.
Another major difference between LED and OLED is the viewing angle. OLED has a wider viewing angle and also has a more dominant black level when compared to TVs with LED technology.
Understanding and Functions of LEDs on LED TVs
LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode which is a small solid state device that can produce light due to the movement of electrons through a semi-conductor. LEDs are relatively small and brighter when compared to incandescent and fluorescent lamps. However, LEDs are not small enough to be used as television pixels. Therefore, LEDs are only used as backlights for LED Televisions. So basically, LED TV is a type of TV that uses an LCD screen with LEDs as backlighting or backlighting sources.
Understanding OLED on OLED TV
OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. Simply put, OLEDs are made with organic semiconductors that glow when they are energized. This thin layer of organic material is placed between the two conducting elements so that it can emit bright light when an electric current is applied. OLEDs can be made to be very thin, small and very flexible. On OLED TVs, each pixel lights itself independently of the others so there is no need for LCD and Backlighting.
Key Differences between LED and OLED TV
Following are some of the main differences between LED TV and OLED TV:
- LED TVs need a backlight for lighting, which is basically a light-emitting diode or LED itself. On the other hand, OLEDs do not require a backlight to produce illumination, because the carbon used as an organic material acts as a natural light source.
- The OLED screen provides a better viewing angle of about 84 degrees compared to the LED which is around 54 degrees so that the LED display provides excellent image quality when viewed from the center and there will be a decrease in image quality when viewed from the left or right side.
- In terms of brightness, LED displays provide much better brightness than OLED. Forcing an OLED to provide maximum brightness for a longer duration can reduce its lifespan.
- LED TV screens allow us to have a thinner screen compared to LCD TVs. However, OLED allows for thinner screens when compared to LED TVs.
- LEDs provide slower response times than OLEDs. Because the diodes in OLED systems respond at a much faster rate than the diodes in LEDs.
- LED displays provide a larger screen size of around 100 inches compared to OLED which is around 90 inches.
- OLEDs consume less energy to operate compared to LEDs due to their self-igniting nature as they do not require a backlight to initiate operation.
- Screen burn-in is a problem associated with CRTs, plasmas and OLEDs. But this effect does not occur on the LED screen. Burn-in occurs when the screen responsible for image formation decreases over time.
